What is IVF?

The female partner intakes infertility drugs and injections as prescribed by the doctor. With the help of ultrasound, the mature eggs are drawn from the female ovaries with a needle. The eggs, along with the semen of the male partner or any donor, are put in a petri dish for fertilization. The fertilized eggs are termed as an embryo that is transferred into the female uterus after a few days. This process of fertilization is called in virto fertilization or in short IVF. What is a test tube baby?

The baby conceived via the IVF process is called a test tube baby. Around the 1930s, test tube babies were used for artificial insemination. This process was carried out by transferring specially washed male semen directly to the female uterus through the cervix. 

History of the two phenomena 

The research for the IVF treatment started in the 1930s and had a long journey before reaching success. The semen of animals like dogs and rabbits was used in the labs for the experiment. Experiment with human semen started in the 1940s.
